Style Crush of the Week

I hope that everyone fell in love with Emma Roberts' sweet, girly style last week! I definitely broke out my most feminine pieces.

This week's style crush is...Chloe Moretz! She's chic and high-fashion, but always adds a bit of quirk and individuality.

She's become one of the rising young stars of Hollywood. She has appeared in many high-profile movies like Hugo, Kick-Ass, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and (500) Days of Summer and always plays outspoken, independent young women.

As she's been rising to fame, she's also been developing her own awesome personal style! She is very stylish and high-fashion, but always remembers that she's only fourteen! She never tries to look older than she is. To add a youthful touch to every outfit, she uses a cute, quirky accessory that makes a statement!

This week, experiment with your quirky side! Break out your fun jewelry and all of the pieces that you don't wear that often. Take risks!

Maddy180Days

If you've been looking for a cool new blog to inspire you, look no further! One of my dear friends, Maddy Galindo, has a style blog called Maddy180Days. She posts a picture of her outfit every single day, and blogs about fashion, her life, and her thoughts.

I asked Maddy for an interview, and she was gracious enough to answer some questions for me!

1. What inspired you to start your blog?
-I love fashion and needed an excuse to look cute everyday, and with the entire internet potentially watching me I wanted to look as good as possible!

2. What motivates you to post every single day?
-I love to write, and I can't even think of what would happen if I stopped writing this blog. I need to finish it!

3. How has your style changed since you started your blog? Have you put more thought into your outfits since you now people will be seeing them online?
-I like to think of myself as the person who made hipster mainstream, which I am not proud of. So I have tried to tone down the 70s and have tried to incorporate more of a 1950s and 1990s feel at the same time. I am proud not to consider myself a hipster.

4. What's your favorite part about blogging?
-I can finally unleash my naturally brazen reactions on a safe place where my words won't get me in trouble. (Most of the time that is!)

5. How have people reacted to your blog?
-I'm basically a celebrity. That's a lie, but I do get a lot of positive reviews!

6. Do you think you'll continue your blog next year?
-Absolutely not. Unless my "fans" insist...

7. What do you love about fashion?
-Trends aren't for everybody; if you do something on your own it can still be beautiful.

8. What are three words that describe your personal style?
-Quirky, unique, ambitious.

9. What pieces do you think every girl needs to have in your closet?
-TOMS! I don't know what I would do without mine.

10. What's your style mantra?
-Faded chic.

11. Who's your style icon?
-Katy Perry. She's been my idol ever since her early days, and her ability to be so flamboyant while still keeping her class is so inspiring.

12. Do you find yourself more inspired by famous people or people that you know?
-Neither. I don't really pay attention to what other people wear because I like to make it all my own.

13. What style blogs do you love?
-Ones that have a lot of pictures. I'm practically at second grade reading tolerance.

Here's the link to her blog. Be sure to check it out! Maybe you'll be inspired to start your own blog!

Style Crush of the Week

I hope everyone was inspired by last week's style crush, Jennifer Lawrence! I love her and her relaxed, yet pulled together style (and I loved her performance in The Hunger Games!).

This week's style crush is...Emma Roberts!

Her style is so classic and girly. She always looks sophisticated and chic, but manages to make it look effortless! She wears classic cuts and shapes that flatter her figure. She knows how to dress her body and always uses that to her advantage! She favors ladylike fabrics like tweed and chiffon, but makes sure that she still looks young and fresh. Even though she's girly and sweet, she's not afraid to take a risk.

Her beauty looks are always flawless too. She uses very neutral makeup, which enhances her natural beauty. Her hair is always beautiful, and her red carpet updos are perfect inspiration for prom!

This week, let Emma Roberts' young but sophisticated vibe inspire you! Break out your fluttery dresses and structured jackets. I guarantee you'll get compliments all week long!

Here's some photos to get you started:

Beauty Do's and Don'ts

With all of the crazy trends and expensive products on the market today, navigating the makeup section can be a challenge. You don't want to look cakey and too done up, but you don't want to look like a ghost, either. With these tips, you can feel more at ease when picking out makeup, and it can even be fun!

DO: Wear foundation.
DON'T: Apply it with a sponge.

Applying liquid foundation with a sponge is a sure-fire way to make it look cakey and unnatural. Use your fingers, and apply it like lotion. Spread it evenly all over your face, and make sure to get all the way to the hairline so that it doesn't look like a mask.

DO: Wear smoky eyes.
DON'T: Look like a panda.

Make sure you know how to apply smoky eyes before wearing it out in public. It's easy to apply the dark shadows too liberally, and that can make you look like a panda. Sometimes, rosy hues are the way to go. They're not exactly smoky, but they are dramatic and perfect for evening. They'll add warmth to your face, and will stand out amongst the greys and browns!

DO: Wear red lipstick
DON'T: Feel shy!

Red lips require confidence! It's one of the boldest makeup looks out there, and to pull it off, you have to know you look good.

This girl wears her red lips with confidence, making it look like a statement and not a costume.
Wearing makeup can be so much fun. You can create completely different looks with just the flick of a brush or the swipe of a finger! Remember, makeup is not a mask; it's a way to enhance your natural beauty. So wear those bold looks with confidence, and remember, you look beautiful!

How to Pump Up Your Sweatshirt

In this transition weather, it's very easy to fall into a fashion rut. It's too hot for your heavy winter coat, but not warm enough for your shorts and miniskirts. To compensate, you resort to your trusty crew neck sweatshirt. I always rely on my favorite Drama Club sweatshirt; it's warm and toasty, and probably one of my favorite purchases I've ever made. But if you find yourself wearing your sweatshirt just a bit too much, here's some tips to make it look different and cute every single time!

1. Add interest!
To make your sweatshirt look stylish instead of slouchy, add some pattern on the bottom! By adding a pop of personality, you'll stand out in a sea of blue jeans!

2. Add a scarf
Adding a cute accessory like a scarf will pull the eye away from your sweatshirt and to your beautiful face!

3. It's all about the shoes!
Make a statement with your shoes! It'll add a cute pop of personality and make you feel cute all day long!

TOMS are always a surefire way to grab attention!

Colored Jeans: Your New Favorite Item!

It's time to break free of your classic blue jeans! To pump up your clothes for spring, colored jeans are your go-to item. It's an easy way to refresh your wardrobe by adding only a couple of items!

Colored jeans are a simple way to add interest to any outfit. They'll add a shocking pop of color and brighten your day! Make sure to keep the top neutral, though. It's easy look clownish if there's too much going on.

My favorite shades are cobalt blue, pink, and bright red! I wear mine all the time, and always get compliments (especially my pink jeans!). I like to use them to pump up my sweatshirts; I have a crew neck sweatshirt that I wear all the time, and colored jeans are a great way to make it look different every time!

Another tip: if you can't find the exact shade you want, do it yourself! Take your much-loved white jeans and dye them! Go to your local craft store and buy a few packets of dye, and you can easily make your old jeans feel new again!

Wearing colored jeans is much easier than you think. Here's some photos to inspire you:

Parisian Chic: Check Out This Book!

Today, while my mom and I were perusing the shelves of our favorite local bookstore, we found the cutest book ever! It's called Parisian Chic: A Style Guide, and it's written by Ines de la Fressange. Style Crush of the Week

I hope that everyone found some retro inspiration from Audrey Hepburn last week! She's always been one of my icons, and I always adore her outfits.

This week, our style icon is....Jennifer Lawrence!

She's shot to fame in the last few weeks because of her phenomenal turn as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. She's handled the press extremely well and is absolutely adorable...and looks cute the whole time! Her red carpet style is classic and feminine; she always looks natural but put-together. Her street style is cozy and comfy, but always cute! She's a tomboy at heart, but always looks feminine and chic.

This week, let your inner tomboy shine. Break out your converse and cozy sweaters, but always include a feminine touch like Jennifer Lawrence. Add a bow or a scarf, and make sure your hair is always flowing and fabulous! Here's some photos for inspiration:

Colorblocking

Lately, colorblocking has become extremely popular on the runway. Designers like Fendi and Marc Jacobs have presented models clad in bright, contrasting colors. While the runway version of this trend is very eccentric and high-fashion, there is a way to make it work for your own wardrobe.

Runway Version:

Real Version:

Make sure to keep all of the tones within the same color palette, and keep the clothes form-fitting. This will allow you to look chic and put together, rather than like a clown!

Colorblocking is an easy way to make a statement and stand out in a crowd! You'll look like a runway model straight out of Vogue!

Welcome to the 60s!

I have a huge love of retro. When I'm wearing a flouncy, mod dress, I always feel adorable and chic. It makes me feel like Audrey Hepburn!

Every girl should have some retro touches in her wardrobe. Whether it's a dress with a bouncy cut or a big red hair bow, it will make everyone feel cuter than ever. Here's some easy ways to incorporate some 60s influence:

1.  A Bouncy Dress
A dress with a retro cut is a must. It's universally flattering, and usually comes in bright prints, which is so fun! Here's a great option from ModCloth:

The Necessity of Style Dress ($65)
2.  A Bright Heel
If you want to quickly add a pop of color to any outfit, add a bright heel! For extra 60s flair, make them kitten heels. You'll look like a classic Southern lady!

3. A Classic Cardigan
To provide structure and color to any simple outfit, add a cute cardi! This classic option from J. Crew was inspired by First Lady Jackie O., and it's one of my favorite pieces in my closet! I wear it with everything. It's a little on the expensive side, so pick a color that you can wear with anything.

4. Black Cigarette Pants
Icons like Audrey Hepburn and Coco Chanel popularized this look in the early 20th century, and it's still a staple today. I own about three pairs! They go with absolutely everything, and they can morph to fit anyone's personal style: Indie, classic, even preppy. This great pair from J. Crew is stretchy and comfortable, but will always look structured and put together. They're well worth the money, I can assure you!

Armed with all of these classic, retro pieces, you can add the perfect 60s touch to every outfit!

Hipster: Done Right

Hipsters. Urban Dictionary calls them: People that reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers; often seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses. Hipsters are a great way to get fashion inspiration. They have a very urban, indie, rock-inspired fashion sense. I love watching the hipsters in San Francisco; I always think of dozens of cool outfits I can make with my clothes at home! Here's your guide to how to dress like a hipster, but do it right.

1. Shoes
Hipsters are fond of vintage sneakers like Keds or Converse. A cute pair of lace-up Keds would be so cool with a pair of cuffed jeans and a plaid button down.

Ked's Champion Organic Sneaker ($45)
So cute!

Hipsters also love their combat boots. They're super edgy and cool, but they're not too over-the-top. Here's the pair that I have from Steve Madden. I adore them!

Steve Madden Troopa Boot ($100)
2. Eyewear
Hipsters are especially fond of horn-rimmed glasses, particularly the classic Ray-Ban wayfarer shape. If you don't wear glasses, try the same shape, but sunglasses! I have black wayfarers and love them. They flatter every face shape and they'll never go out of style!

Cameron Mitchell, a contestant on The Glee Project, and the epitome of a hipster. How cute are his glasses?
Even Ryan Gosling rocks classic black wayfarers! Now you have to get some.
3. Denim
Skinny, skinny, skinny. Skinny jeans are so rock and roll. They're already a staple in your wardrobe, so cuff the bottom and you're set!
Hipsters also love denim shorts. Special touches like fraying and light wash make them especially cool. Pair them with tights in the winter for an indie look! (And you'll stay toasty warm!)

All of these looks are so effortless. You'll ooze hipster cool, and your friends will beg for your secrets!
